The mission focus for Rebekah's Sunday school class this month is providing "Meals-in-a-bag" for families in poverty stricken nations of Africa. These meals cost just one dime (10 Cents!)!!!!!! So her teachers have charged her class with a mission of their own. Through June 29th this group of 3 and 4 year olds will be on a quest to collect as many dimes as they possibly can. Today we went through Rebekah's piggy banks and the loose change jar for all the dimes we could find. In those two jars alone we found dimes totaling $17.80. (Not bad.) And now it is time for her to go out.
When I read the flyer to the parents in regards to the "challenge" I got very excited. I am thrilled to have a opportunity to make our child aware of the ways she can serve, and ultimately touch hearts for the Lord. I get chills thinking of the power of the Lord and the fact that he can and does work through "the least of these", even a group of 3 and 4 year olds. Just today as we were dividing coins, Rebekah and I talked about children across this world who are hungry and who don't have the "treats" we have here. While I think the concept and overall picture do not fully penetrate her 4-year old mind, I do think that she is beginning to realize that we are called to have hearts of compassion for others. It's a start.
So I thought it would be appropriate to make a request of you. If you know where we live and wouldn't mind sending or dropping off the dimes you have on hand, I think that this could be used as a great lesson for my daughter. I am excited to show her (tangibly) how we can work together as family, as friends and as Christians towards a common goal of showing Christ's love to others. I want her to get excited about the things the Lord wants to do through her.I pray that through life's little lessons (such as this) she will learn how we are called to be servants of our fellow man; and because of the sacrifice Christ made for us, we too are called to sacrifice so that others may come to know HIS grace.
Your contribution would be greatly appreciated and it will be fun to see how much we can raise!
Grandpa's, Grandma's, Aunts, Uncles, cousins I am counting on you. ;)
