Independence Hall…

We’ve been having a lot of fun in history lately!

Today we took a field trip (along with Grandma and Aunt Donna) to Independence Hall in Buena Park. I remember visiting this place when I was in elementary school.  We have been learning all about the birth of the U.S.A  by reading, reading and reading tons of books about the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Revolutionary War, Benjamin Franklin,George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Paul Revere, John Hancock, Betsy Ross (just to name a few)  and the men and women who started our nation. So a little trip on a beautiful day to Independence Hall was a great way to cap off our studies. (Also… we have begun to study the individual states of the U.S. and just happened to be studying Pennsylvania this week! Winking smile)

I have to tell you a little bit about how we stepped back in time today…

When we got there, we walked into the building and saw the bell.

The building was quiet and as far as we knew, it seemed like we were the only ones there. As we were reading the inscription and looking around the room, a  side door opened and out walked…. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN! Smile(There was a school field trip and presentation taking place in the next room.) I think we caught him a little off guard… but he was so kind to stay in character and chat with my girls. They seemed a little star-struck…. I mean come on…. IT’S BENJAMIN FRANKLIN!!!! We have been learning all about him!!

When he left,  my girls were kind of in a state of shock… and it wasn’t until later in the afternoon, that I realized… they didn’t fully understand that we were talking to a man “pretending” to be Mr. Franklin. They were actually pretty convinced that we had met the man himself. Smile

I love this inscription on the wall.

The people working there were so kind to give us extra tidbits of info.

The girls especially loved this old coin machine.

We listened to an audio presentation in the room below and imagined we were there at the signing of the Declaration of Independence.  I got chills thinking about the intense weight that these men carried… knowing that the future of their families and the generations

to come were resting on their votes, thinking of them

weighing the costs and choosing freedom….

knowing that they would first have to pay a price.

Afterwards we walked across the street and had Knott’s Berry Farm’s famous fried chicken for lunch.

I had my lunch to-go… as in I ate my lunch while chasing a certain 2 year old who had been strapped in a stroller and really on his best behavior. This picture shows you a little of how four kids has made me a little more “lax” and willing to choose my battles. Battle number 1… do I force him to SIT and eat when he is stir crazy and tired…. NO. Battle number 2… do I fight him to put on shoes… or just let him run in socks…… I threw away the socks. The Revolutionary War was a war worth fighting… making my son sit for fried chicken? Not really.Winking smile

A good day in being out and a great day in learning!

It just so happens…

In our school lessons this year we have been searching scripture for the different names of Jesus. Last month one of the names we focused on was “The Rock.” Our memory verse for 2 weeks was…

Matthew 7:24… “"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

Our science lessons were focusing on “What the Earth is made of…”. So we have been reading about, doing different activities with and looking at pictures  of the different layers of the earth…

Soooo it was a pretty awesome “coincidence” that my engineer of a hubby came home with the info (I really mean ALL the info… he was pretty into it) about this.

The LACMA is moving a 340-ton piece of granite from Riverside, CA to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and it is quite an impressive feat. They move it at night and have designated a route specifically able to withstand both the weight and width of this piece of earth.  There are workers that are actually walking with it the entire route. Pretty impressive!

And so because, my Josh is… well… who he is… and because he does what he does… this sparked his keen interest and it became a MUST on our field trip list.  I love that, truly…  it just so happened that we had been all into rocks lately (in several senses of the word) and here we have MOTHER of rocks driving by our house! (not really right by our house… but close… you know what I mean. )

Anyways…. all in all…I’d say it was pretty ROCKIN!

(sorry had to do itWinking smile)

And then… she was EIGHT!

It happened in the blink of an eye…

On Monday… our Rebekah turned 8!

She had a weekend of being loved on, indulged and treated like royalty.

Friday night… she went with her sister and Grandpa and Grandma to a fancy hotel… for swimming, a fancy dinner, a little shopping…. basically getting spoiled.

Saturday… after getting home from her night away…she got to celebrate with her cousins and the Nelson side for a February birthdays get together.

And on Sunday….

she had a very big moment!

This year Josh and I asked Rebekah if she would want to get her ears pierced… to which she responded with an emphatic “YES!!!!!”

So after church on Sunday we went to “Claire’s” …

she was a bit nervous… but certain that she wanted to go through with it.

see… a little nervous. Winking smile

And then this shows a little bit about our “tough girl”… this is how she took the pain….

closed her eyes….1,2,3….

and…. that’s it! She didn’t wince. Didn’t cringe or cry or even say a word. Just looked wide eyed straight forward and braced for the second pinch.

Then she said… “ummm… owe…. that kind of hurt.” and SMILED!!!!

This picture says…. “I WILL NOT CRY!”Winking smile

Then we went over to Grandpa and Grandma’s house for pizza and a few presents.

… a new bike!!!!!

I love this picture! Anna was so excited for Rebekah to get this. She kept this secret for a whole 2 weeks and was DYING to tell her! When the secret was finally revealed…. I think she was giddy with relief that she didn’t have to hold it in any longer. I love that she is squeezing her sister tight and squealing with just as much delight!

How did those 8 years just rocket by!?

Happy birthday Rebekah Kate!

On her actual birthday… Bekah had a check up… she’s healthy and thriving!  A lunch date with Daddy to chick-fil-a , a movie rental and dinner at one of our favorite little Mexican restaurants.

Rebekah Kate… you are a joy to celebrate, a delight to watch grow and a miraculous gift from your Creator!
