road trip… day 3

Good morning Carlsbad, New Mexico….

Micah made some new friends…

Here he is so proud of his big boy car seat (our late night purchase the night before).

We headed back to Carlsbad Caverns to see…. well…. the caverns.

The three older kids earned their Junior Ranger badges to add to their growing collections.

No pictures can do this created natural wonder justice! What  an incredible place. Surreal, really. It is so quiet, so calm,  slightly chilly and absolutely breath taking. We were all wowed!

One formal family picture before we got in the car and began the trek towards San Antonio….

IMG_0459

he was pretty wiped out… still kinda weak from his carsickness episode the day before. Sad smile

Pushpops and Ices always make for smiling kiddos.

This was another incredibly long day, mainly because we enjoyed ourselves and took our time at Carlsbad Caverns in the morning and we lost an hour with the time change. We had an (interesting…. ok gross…. actually burned-in-my-mind disgusting) experience at a small Texas town Sonic and finally pulled into a beautiful San Antonio campground well after midnight.  The kids were starting to get the hang of the whole long drive thing and were handling the long hours like pros!

Tomorrow…. exploring San Antonio and no driving (well at least farWinking smile)

Road Trip… Day 2

We woke up in Tombstone, bright and early. We got everything hitched up ( we got pretty good at the hitching and unhitching by the end of this trip) and headed for our next stop… Carlsbad National Park, New Mexico.

IMG_0394

We drove through a little town called Benson Arizona right on the San Pedro river and had to take a few pictures in honor of our nephew Peter Benson. Smile

New Mexico…

And this would be the exit that we ran out of gas… the kids and I sat and waited and then cheered daddy on as he carried the gas can back to our car.

We booked it. This was by far one of our longest days…. but we made it just in time for the bat’s in flight ranger program at Carlsbad National Park.  It was pretty cool to sit there at dusk and watch as thousands of bats fluttered out of the cave over our heads.

We learned a lesson on this day… just because something says “Carlsbad Caverns KOA”…. does not mean that it is IN Carlsbad Caverns or even, necessarily, NEAR Carlsbad Caverns…. we finally pulled into our campsite around 11:00 that night after a stop at Wal-Mart for a new car seat (for Micah after a bout with car sickness…. there was no salvaging his old seat….. yuck!).  We ended up eating bananas and tortillas that night and we carried four kids into their beds in the trailer when we finally got set up. What a day! Looking back though… all worth it! More adventures to come tomorrow….

Here we go!!!!!!

August 3rd… time to head off on another Nelson adventure! This time we are headed a little farther from home….

After a few last minute preparations in the days prior to leaving…

IMG_0348

… we were finally all packed up….

IMG_0337

…. had the essentials…..

IMG_0351

…hitched up our trailer…

…. and early (before sunrise) on August 3rd, we hit the open road. First destination was Tombstone, Arizona!

IMG_0356

iphones and pacifiers…. a very helpful combo…Winking smile

IMG_0352

Pit stop in Phoenix at one of our favorite places to eat… Wildflower Bread Co.

IMG_4396

The best iced tea!

IMG_4393

And finally just before sunset we arrived in Tombstone with just enough daylight left to explore a little bit before dinner.

My little cowboy…

IMG_0376

We unfortunately got into town a little too late to see the O.K. Corral….

IMG_4406

… but that didn’t stop our kids from taking a peak.

IMG_4404

A few pictures….

IMG_4409

…. and then it was time for dinner.

IMG_0381

And then it was off to bed before another LONG day on the road.

VBS!!!!

July 8th- 12th was VBS week at our church! We look forward to this week every summer! Anna was especially excited because this was the first year she got to be with the big kids in the main program. Mommy worked in Leah’s class and had fun being close enough to Micah’s class to check in on him from time to time! It just isn’t summer without Vacation Bible School!
